STATHS launches fundraiser for construction of state-of-the-art centre
KINGSTON, Jamaica —St Andrew Technical High School’s graduating class of 1978 will on Saturday host a web-a-thon that will kick off a series of fundraising events to raise money for the construction of a state-of-the-art medical counselling and intervention centre at the Bumper Hall-based school.
The web-a-thon will be held from 6 pm to 9 pm.
The aim is to complete the project by 2026 at an estimated cost of US$600,000 to $1 million, according to the organisers STATHS ’78 & Friends in a release.
Saturday’s event will have a sports theme and it is expected that “a number of our past students will be joining to share their sporting experience at STATHS and beyond,” the release stated.
STATHS ’78 & Friends is a 501c-3 corporation (US tax exempt status) founded in 2023.
“We are a virtual organisation with members residing in the US, Canada, and Jamaica. Our mission is to provide the support necessary to enhance the overall health and wellness experience of the students and faculty at St. Andrew Technical High School in Kingston, Jamaica,” the release stated.
“Our current project is the erection of a Medical, Counselling, and Intervention Center (MCIC), the first of its kind in Jamaica,” the release also added.
The project which has the backing of the school’s board and administration hopes to solve a grave need at the school and will expand the current structure from 400sq. ft to 2,800sq. ft as the current structure cannot cater to the over 1,600 students at the school.
STATHS’ rich sporting history will play a big part in Saturday’s event and will highlight the lives and achievements of 16 sporting legends who attended the school including the late Jamaica and West Indies cricketer Richard Austin, Olympian Mike Fray, and Reggae Boy Jeadine White.
