More details, please
Dear Editor,
The Garfield Higgins’ column, ‘Details of a national tragedy’, in yesterday’s Jamaica Observer was a magnificent read. I think he is one of the best researchers and writers in local media.
I found, though, that his article did not focus enough on what happened to the big players like Paul Chen Young of the Eagle Group, Delroy Lindsay of Workers Bank, and Neville Blythe of the UGI Group. The focus for me was important because these were some of the local pioneers who inspired people like me to start a small business.
These three good men had a great vision for Jamaica. They did a lot for black women like me. It is a pity Chen Young, Lindsay, and Blythe were all “finsaced”. The wicked high interest rate policy of then Finance Minister Dr Omar Davies was a sin. The People’s National Party has a lot to answer for.
I agree with Higgins that the Government needs to set up a decent monument to all those who were “finsaced”. I was lucky, I was going to borrow money at high interest rate and then did not. I borrowed from my father in America instead.
I believe it was the best thing to do at the time, especially when I look now at what happened to so many people.
