PAJ condemns Bunting remarks, political leaders undermining integrity of media
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Press Association of Jamaica (PAJ) has strongly condemned recent remarks made by Peter Bunting, a member of the People’s National Party (PNP), suggesting that success is contingent upon working at a “friendly media house” aligned with Government.
The association said such rhetoric is deeply troubling and represents a concerning trend of political leaders trying to undermine the integrity and independence of the media.
In a statement on Tuesday, the PAJ noted that journalists play a crucial role in our democracy, serving as watchdogs, holding power to account, and providing the public with accurate and unbiased information.
It said any attempt to discredit the media or sow distrust among the public is an attack on the very foundations of our democratic society.
The PAJ is therefore reaffirming its commitment to defending the freedom of the press and the rights of journalists to operate without fear of intimidation or reprisal.
It once again called on all political leaders to respect the essential role of the media and to refrain from making statements aimed at eroding public trust in journalism.
“We stand in solidarity with our colleagues in the media and will continue to advocate for a free, fair, and independent press in Jamaica,” the association said.
