Chancellor Hall’s Super Lions Awards to region’s influential leaders
Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness, Chief Justice Bryan Sykes, VM Group President and CEO Courtney Campbell, and Caricom consultant and administrator Armstrong Alexis are among this year’s recipients of Chancellor Hall’s Super Lions Awards.
The event, scheduled for October 26, 2024, will mark the 70th anniversary of Chancellor Hall, the only all-male residential hall on The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus which boasts of being the home of some of the most influential leaders in the region.
Justice Sir Ian Winder, who has made stellar contributions to the legal and judicial system of The Bahamas, will also be presented with the Super Lions Award.
Additionally, investment banker Paul Simpson will receive the Outstanding Lion Award, a news release from the organisers said.
“Chancellor Hall’s role in developing leaders is unparalleled. The hall’s emphasis on discipline, academic rigour, and community involvement has shaped men who have gone on to lead in various sectors, including politics, education, business, and law,” the release states
“This legacy of leadership is epitomised by this year’s Super Lions Awards recipients, who continue to embody the values instilled during their time at Chancellor Hall.”
Among the hall’s notable alumni are former Jamaican prime ministers PJ Patterson and Bruce Golding; former Barbadian Prime Minister the late Owen Arthur; former governor general of Jamaica Sir Kenneth Hall; political scientist Professor Trevor Munroe; and late Guyanese historian, political activist and academic Walter Anthony Rodney.
The Super Lions Awards recognise excellence across four key categories: professional advancement, academic or business achievement, community or national involvement, and contribution to regional integration.
The organisers said that the Super Lions Banquet “serves as a platform for alumni and current students to connect, network, and celebrate the achievements of Chancellor Hall”.
The event’s agenda includes a cocktail hour, cultural arts performances, and speeches from awardees, making it a unique opportunity to engage with some of the region’s most influential leaders.
“While the event is closed to the public, persons are encouraged to celebrate these outstanding individuals by viewing the Super Lions Banquet via an online live broadcast. The support of those in attendance will not only honour these leaders but also help fund scholarships for current students residing in Chancellor Hall, ensuring that the next generation can continue this legacy of excellence,” the organisers said.
