Live Wyya gets St Ann honours
The Poor Relief Department of St Ann Municipal Corporation in Ocho Rios recently presented the Live Wyya Band with a plaque recognising their association with that organisation.
For the second-straight year, Live Wyya performed for the indigent on October 10, acknowledged as World Homeless Day. The performance took place at the Ocho Rios Transport Centre.
Jennifer Brown Cunningham, CEO of the Poor Relief Department, made the presentation during the event to Carl Edwards, the band’s leader and bass guitarist, and lead singer Jerome Smickle.
The plaque reads: “The Poor Relief Department of the St Ann Municipal Corporation recognises and appreciates Live Wyya for your continued contribution towards the homeless and mentally challenged.”
Edwards describes the recognition as “a tremendous feeling”.
“This award means a lot to us, because it’s nice to know they acknowledge you, especially in the community you live in. It’s a blessing, giving back to the poor and to the society,” he told the Jamaica Observer. “It’s a positive cause, and it’s a pleasure working with these people.”
Live Wyya got involved with the Poor Relief Department last year with a show at the agency’s Drop-In Centre, which cares for the indigent in Ocho Rios, St Ann’s Bay, Runaway Bay, and Brown’s Town.
Edwards and drummer Arnold Bolt formed Live Wyya in 1999. The initial line-up also included keyboardist Tristan Richards and lead vocalist Jerome Smickle, who are still with the band. Their line-up is completed by guitarists Stephan Foster and Ian “Beezy” Coleman.
