Three teams secure round-of-16 spots in daCosta Cup
FORMER champions Frome Technical and Glenmuir High, along with Happy Grove, are the early qualifiers for the round of 16 in the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup football competition, after wins in Saturday’s second set of games in the round of 32.
All three scored consecutive wins in their respective group to ensure at least second place, with the top two in each zone advancing to the next round of the competition after nine schools went to the round of 32 games with a chance to secure a third round spot.
Frome Technical blanked Black River High 2-0 in the first game of a double-header at St Elizabeth Technical Sports Complex in Santa Cruz to ensure their passage from Group 2.
Glenmuir High had a similar victory margin over Titchfield High in the second game of the Carder Park double-header to ensure they will advance from Group 7.
Happy Grove ensured their passage from Group 5 after their 4-3 win over Denbigh High in the first game played at Carder Park yesterday.
Stevaughn Spence continued his blistering scoring run when he gave Frome Technical the lead in the 32nd minute before Jamaro Grant added a second in the 64th minute.
Ocho Rios put themselves in position to get the other spot, along with Frome Tech, after hammering Cedric Titus High 4-0, with Keanu Reid getting a hat-trick and Jaheim Williams the other as they improved to four points.
Orel Miller and Orane Watson scored for Glenmuir High, their second 2-0 win as they sit comfortably in Group 7.
Defending champions Clarendon College came from a goal down to beat Paul Bogle High 3-1 as they drew level on three points each.
Shevone Miller scored a hat-trick as Happy Grove High edged Denbigh High 4-3, scoring seven goals in their two games.
Munro College were ambushed 20-1 at Drax Hall by Brown’s Town High, who took over the lead in Group 4 on four points, while St Elizabeth Technical and Manchester High both missed a chance to advance from Group 3 after they drew 0-0 in the second game at STETHS.
Kemps Hill High and Rusea’s High are tied on four points at the top of Group 1, after contrasting results.
Kemps Hill handed Spot Valley High consecutive losses after holding on for a 2-1 in in the first game of a double-header at Trelawny Multipurpose stadium.
Allan Banton gave Kemps Hill an early lead when he scored in the fourth minute, and Shemar Daley added a second in the 21st minute.
Spot Valley, who were beaten by Rusea’s in the first game on Thursday, stormed back in the second half and pulled a goal back when Keyanta Clarke converted a penalty in the 62nd minute but could not get the other goal to earn a point.
In Lucea, Rusea’s came from a goal down late to earn a 1-1 draw against Cornwall College, both coming from the penalty spot within minutes of each other.
Port Antonio High and Central are tied on four points each in Group 6; Port Antonio High beat Yallahs High 4-1 with goals from Kerone George, Dwayne Rodger and Shaquone Hardware, as well as an own goal, while Dontae Lewis scored for Yallahs.
Central High and Dinthill Technical ended 0-0 in Linstead.
