Sykes lauds Justices conferred with national honours
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Judiciary is celebrating four of its members, all high court justices, who will be conferred with national honours on Monday during the annual National Awards Ceremony at King’s House.
The ceremony, held each year on National Heroes Day, will be observed on October 21 this year.
Chief Justice Bryan Sykes congratulated the four justices who will be awarded the Order of Distinction for their contributions to the development of the Judiciary of Jamaica. The honourees are Justices David Batts, Evan Brown, Bertram Morrison, and Lorna Shelly-Williams.
“I wish to congratulate the justices who have received national recognition for their service to governance, the rule of law, and the enhancement of democracy. Each recipient has contributed immensely to the judiciary and served the people of Jamaica excellently. May this award be a celebration of excellence, a reminder of the work still to be done, and an encouragement to continue striving to make Jamaica the place to live, work, do business, and raise families, thereby enabling Jamaica to continue playing her part in advancing the welfare of the whole human race,” said Sykes.
The chief justice added that the recognition of these justices comes at a time when the Judiciary of Jamaica has been excelling in various aspects of the judicial process.
“This includes backlog reduction, the opening of a new court building in St Ann, membership in the International Consortium for Court Excellence, beginning the process for ISO certification, and becoming part of the Service Excellence Programme under the Public Sector Modernisation Unit,” he said.
