JWN Foundation celebrates dentistry student Lauren Walfall
THE J Wray & Nephew Foundation (JWNF) has unveiled its 2024 cohort of master blender scholars, with Lauren Walfall among the 10 recipients of this prestigious award. The master blender award, valued at $450,000, is specifically designed to support top performers in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) fields. It is a distinguished accolade reserved for the top academics in JWNF’s annual scholarship programme. The recent announcement marks Walfall’s second time receiving support from the programme.
Now in its eighth year, the revamped JWNF scholarship programme continues to demonstrate the foundation’s dedication to economic empowerment, talent development, and community transformation. This initiative aligns with JWNF’s broader mission to create sustainable opportunities within its operational territories (Spanish Town Road, New Yarmouth, Clarendon, and Appleton, St Elizabeth).
In responding, an overjoyed Walfall shared that the scholarship has been a game-changer.
“The path to becoming a dentist is frequently filled with difficulties, such as demanding academic requirements, extensive clinical training, and significant financial obligations. The JWNF scholarship has changed my life and has been a source of inspiration. My financial burden has decreased thanks to this scholarship, allowing me to concentrate on my academics and extracurricular activities,” the 21-year-old shared.
She added: “The scholarship has not only alleviated my financial stress but also inspired me to strive for excellence and embody the values of service and leadership. Along with seeing an improvement in my grades, I got more involved in extracurricular activities on the hall where I reside at the university. It has also given me a great deal of gratitude and motivated me to give back to my community, which significantly contributed to my personal and professional growth and development.”
The 2024 JWNF scholarships, valued at a total of $26,315,000, represents a notable increase from last year’s disbursement of $19,280,000, highlighting the foundation’s dedication to educational development.
“We are incredibly proud of Lauren and all of our scholarship recipients,” said Tanikie McClarthy Allen, CEO of the JWN Foundation.
“Lauren’s journey exemplifies the excellence and dedication we aim to support through our scholarship programmes. Her success is a demonstration of the transformative power of education and the vital role that scholarships play in helping students achieve their dreams.”
Since the programme’s inception in 2016, the JWN Foundation has awarded over 2,000 scholarships with a combined value exceeding $167,000,000, empowering students across Jamaica to reach their full potential.
