BoxoSox — the most Jamaican socks ever
Created to incite euphoria through history and cultural retention, fast-rising enterprise BoxoSox is already making a name for itself with hopes to trample the market decked out in the most Jamaican socks ever.
Less than six months since its official launch at the 11th Jamaica Diaspora Conference held in Florida, the company, which has now become a full movement, targets mainly Diasporans — allowing lovers of Jamaica the opportunity to remain connected with some of the best of the island irrespective of wherever they may be within the world. Through its highly sought after Irie Steppings collection easily recognised by bold coloured prints and culturally rich designs curated by local artists, the socks have been taking markets by storm, spreading the spirit of Jamaica as it warms one foot at a time.
“BoxoSox was started because I saw an opportunity to capitalise on the trend of men wearing happy socks to accentuate their outfits and to amplify their personalities. Conceptualised in 2020, we are now a full-fledged manufacturing and distribution business creating products that reflects some of the best parts of the Jamaican culture. We offer Jamaica themed novelty socks as well as custom pieces,” Chief Operation Officer (COO) Marsha Rae McBean, who endearingly refers to herself as the “Sox lady”, told the Jamaica Observer in detailing the start-up of the business.
“A world-class brand and product made by Jamaicans as a nicely packaged gift for lovers of Jamaica near and far; our socks can be worn for work or play to honour your love for Jamaica, every day and in every way,” the local entrepreneur also said to
Sunday Finance.
From its ‘Everything irie’, ‘Music Mek yah’, ‘Sun Sea and Sand’, ‘Likkle but Tallawah’, ‘Out of Many’ and ‘Ja 60 Diamond’ specially crafted mood matcher pairs, BoxoSox wants socks lovers to reverse feelings of longing, boredom, coldness, inferiority and homesickness with a box of their specially crafted pieces, most of which are largely inspired by aspects of Jamaica’s beautiful landscape, creativity and music.
“Our mission with Irie Steppings is to promote the best of Jamaica, creating a constant space for national pride and a vehicle for cultural retention. What better way to do it by wearing a pair of comfortable socks. With a wide range of designs and new collections released seasonally, BoxoSox will keep your sock game fresh and trendy,” McBean further said of the mission.
Banking on the continued support of Jamaicans home and abroad along with visitors to the island’s shores, she said the focus is to overtime establish distribution points throughout hotel gift shops and attractions in the tourist areas.
Encouraged by the reception of the market and the take-up of products, which continue to fly off the shelf since roll-out, McBean said she remains eager, excited and even curious about where the products, which have got rave reviews from a numbers of prominent customers and supporters in government, entertainment and other industries, is to take her next. Following a successful US City Promotional Tour across parts of Florida, Maryland and New York which saw overwhelming support of the products, the COO’s magnified vision now sees her looking to sell the unique products in a number of other countries. Currently, products are sold locally at select distribution outlets or can be bought via the company’s website, with worldwide shipping available.
The budding entrepreneur said longer-term plans should see also the opening of a manufacturing operation locally. At present, products are mostly done by a supplier overseas.
“In the near future, the aim is to provide other everyday dress wear and athletic socks. Our products are high-quality and comfortable and we want to share its comfort with many more consumers from the young to the old. Our immediate aim is to, however, make it the gift of choice for Christmas,” she said of the outlook.
