Magee eager to ‘kick on’ after Reggae Boyz return
REGGAE Boyz midfielder Tyreek Magee says he is very grateful for the support and love from everyone following his recent call-up to Jamaica’s squad for their Concacaf Nations League matches against Nicaragua and Honduras.
Magee had a good performance against Nicargua, highlighted by a defence-splitting pass in the build-up to the Reggae Boyz’s opening goal against the Nicaraguans in the 2-0 victory last week.
However, he had a subpar performance against the Hondurans at the National Stadium on Monday as the game ended 0-0.
Magee, 25, said he wants to grab every available opportunity to play for the national team.
“There is no feeling that beats representing your country and so I am just happy to be here and happy to help the country in whatever way that I can to win games,” he said.
“The last game against Nicaragua, I had a good game — but not [against Honduras]. It was hot and cold but I just have to kick on from here whenever I get the next opportunity; I just have to make the most of it.
“I feel like I am a lot better in both areas — both physically and mentally — and so I just have to keep going and just kick on from here and just keep doing what I am doing,” Magee reasoned.
The former Jamaica College standout currently plays for the Colorado Springs Switchbacks in the United Soccer League (USL) in the United States.
Before that, Magee spent two years in Belgium’s top flight with KAS Eupen but, due to a lack of playing time, switched to the Switchbacks last year with whom he has produced some outstanding performances this season.
He said he has received a lot of love and advice from Reggae Boyz Head Coach Steve McClaren.
“Everything that he [McClaren] has been saying to me is positive because he likes me. He likes how I look on the ball and he feels like I can win games, like [on Monday] after the game he was saying to me that, ‘You have days when it is not your day.’ I feel like he believes in me a lot — and that is a good thing,” Magee stated.
“I just have to stay fit, and I am definitely going to look back on this game and see what I could have done better, and stuff like that, and just constantly try to improve my game,” he added.
Magee, one of the few creative attacking midfielders that the country has produced in the last 10 years, was overlooked by previous Reggae Boyz Head Coach Heimir Hallgrimsson, who spent almost two years at the helm before resigning in July.
Magee said he believes a lot in his abilities and that he is committed to working much harder on his all-round game.
“Just keep supporting me because I really appreciate it, and even in the bad games just keep supporting me,” he urged fans.
“I am human, and at the end of the day I am not going to be good in every single game. I really appreciate what the people of Jamaica have been doing for me and it only can get better from here on.
“I have grown a lot mentally, and it is showing in my game, and so I am just grateful that I can grow and recognise things this early,” he said.
Magee has provided three assists in 24 appearances for the Switchbacks, and according to him things in the USL have been going well and he is pleased with the strides that he has been making in the league.
“The club season has been going really well for me because I have been having a good season, and that is why I got this call-up as I have really been enjoying my football,” he said.
