Fearless Soul stuns rivals in Harlequin Trophy upset
Fearless Soul, a four-year-old chestnut colt conditioned by Philip Feanny, defied the odds to stun rivals with an electrifying run to win the $1.4-million Harlequin Trophy on Saturday, October 12, 2024.
With Paul Francis in the irons, Fearless Soul was sent off as a 5-1 betting option. Despite being overshadowed by more fancied rivals, the colt sprang to life, crossing the finish line a length ahead of 4-5 favourite Sensational Move and the 9-5 Madelyn’s Sunshine.
The Open Allowance contest for three-year-olds and upward, held over 5 furlongs (1,000m) straight, showcased Fearless Soul’s speed and agility. The colt’s winning time of 59.3 seconds (23.4 x 46.4) left onlookers impressed.
Feanny revealed that his charge had always possessed tremendous potential.
“He’s a top-class horse but Fearless Soul has a little head problem,” Feanny told the
Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide.
Fearless Soul’s unpredictability had long been a challenge for Feanny. “He always loved five-straight; his first win was over this distance,” the trainer explained.
As Feanny ponders Fearless Soul’s next move, uncertainty lingers. “I don’t know the next move for him as yet,” Feanny admitted.
Ability (Robert Halledeen), Sensational Move (Dane Dawkins), and Madelyn’s Sunshine (Tevin Foster) sprinted to the front, vying for the early lead. Fearless Soul settled in behind the pace, biding his time.
As the field crossed the dummy rails, Fearless Soul made his move. Francis urged his mount forward, and the responsive colt began to challenge for supremacy. In the last half-furlong, Fearless Soul unleashed a blistering burst of speed, leaving his rivals.
With a powerful stride, he drew away from the pack, securing an emphatic win at the wire.
