British High Commission unveils ‘A Tale of Two Cities’ mural on Kingston’s Creative Artwalk
The British High Commission has unveiled a vibrant new mural on the Kingston Creative Artwalk, created by talented visual artist Michael Elliot, in collaboration with Kingston Creative.
The mural is a tribute to the partnership between the United Kingdom and Jamaica across a range of areas including education, healthcare, agriculture, art and sports, the British High Commission said in a release, noting that the mural stands as a testament to the cultural exchange between the UK and Jamaica.
The unveiling ceremony on Wednesday was attended by UK Minister for Latin American and the Caribbean, Baroness Jenny Chapman; British High Commissioner to Jamaica, Judith Slater; Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Denzil Thorpe; and Kingston Creative Managing Director, Andrea Dempster-Chung.
It showcased the mural’s dynamic visuals and captivating storytelling. Through its vivid colours and intricate designs, the artwork encapsulates the rich heritage and enduring legacy of the early generation of migrants, who played a pivotal role in shaping modern British and Jamaican societies, the British High Commission said.
According to Baroness Chapman, “This mural celebrates the continuing diplomatic relationship between the UK and Jamaica, highlighting areas of collaboration such as music, migration, and education. I am confident that our relationship will continue to grow from strength to strength.”
She further emphasised that the artwork not only pays homage to the contributions of the early generation but also serves as a reminder of the importance of unity and partnership in addressing modern challenges.
Dempster-Chung meanwhile expressed her thanks to the UK for commissioning the mural saying, “This mural marks an important addition to the Kingston Creative Artwalk, which aims to foster artistic expression and community engagement through public art. It fosters a sense of connection and progress between our nations, encouraging ongoing dialogue and creativity.”
Artist Michael Elliot shared his inspiration behind the mural, stating, “This work reflects the spirit and the vibrant culture that Jamaica and the UK share. I am honoured to contribute to the Kingston Creative Artwalk and hope this mural will inspire future generations to appreciate our intertwined histories.”
Kingston Creative’s support for the project highlights its commitment to enriching Kingston’s artistic landscape and empowering creatives across Jamaica. The mural not only beautifies the space but also tells a powerful story of resilience, diversity and collaboration, the release stated.
