Clarendon College face-off against Glenmuir High in d’Cup feature
MAY PEN, Clarendon — Defending champions Clarendon College and Glenmuir High will meet in a repeat of last year’s ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup and ISSA Champions Cup finals at Glenmuir High, as the round of 32 in the daCosta Cup continues today with 14 games.
Traditionally any meeting between these two Clarendon powerhouse teams, who have combined to win 14 daCosta Cup titles, is expected to attract a lot of attention — and today’s game will be no different despite both teams failing to win their last two games coming into the second round.
Also today, Manning’s School, the only team still with a perfect win record, will face Manchester High at Llandilo Community Centre; Ocho Rios and Black River High will meet at Drax Hall; Central High takes on Yallahs high at Foga Road; and first-time qualifiers Maldon High host Brown’s Town High in the first game of a double-header at Jarrett Park, followed by Cornwall College meeting Kemps Hill High.
The round of 32 started yesterday, with Port Antonio High and Dinthill Technical playing out a 0-0 draw in a Group 6 game played at Carder Park.
Glenmuir High — who started the competition like a thatch hut on fire, racing to eight straight wins — was one of the first teams to secure a second-round berth before losing back-to-back games to Kemps Hill High and Garvey Maceo High, to end the first round.
Clarendon College — who are seeking to join Munro College and Vere Technical as the only schools to win three straight titles — had to wait until Monday to book their place, after losing to Denbigh High on Saturday and drawing 0-0 against Central High on Monday to finish second in their zone.
Glenmuir High are, however, more impressive in terms of statistics, scoring 53 goals — the most of any teams in the competition — led by Orane Watson and Orel Miller who have combined for 24 goals.
Despite their worst first-round record in years, losing twice, Clarendon College will be keen to keep their title defence going today and will hope Justin Hayles, who has scored seven goals, will be able to lead them to a win.
Central High, who took four points from their two games against Clarendon College this year, winning 1-0 and drawing 0-0, will hope to prove their success so far did not come by accident and will hope to get into the round of 16 at the very least.
They will face a Yallahs High team that was third in Zone L but conceded 12 goals in their nine games played.
After their recent success in getting to the final and a semi-final, Manning’s School’s will have big ambitions of finally going all the way but will face a tough Manchester High team today.
Manning’s School cruised in the first round, winning all eight games while conceding just two goals, and face a Manchester High team that did not have things easy in Zone F, beaten by Belair High and finishing second on goal difference.
Belair High, who won their first-round zone for the first time in school history, will face a tough Denbigh High team at Manchester High in what could be the best contest of the day.
The Garfield Carney-coached Denbigh High are coming off back-to-back wins, including the prized scalp of Clarendon College, and will be full of confidence.
But for losing six points from two games for using an ineligible player Ocho Rios High would have been undefeated, and they will have the edge over Black River High at Drax Hall.
Maldon High will hope their momentum from Saturday — when they came back to earn a dramatic draw and edged Green Pond for their first qualification from the first round — will carry over today.
Brown’s Town will hope for a good start if they are to get into the round of 16 for the first time but playing against Maldon at Jarrett Park could be tough.
Cornwall College also won their first eight games — for the first time in years — but are winless in their last two games. They will hope to rediscover their winning formula against a Kemps Hill team that lost to out-of-contention Old Harbour High after their big upset over Glenmuir High.
In their first season taking instructions from Head Coach Theodore Whitmore, Cornwall College were able to get out of Zone A relatively easy but will be tested in this round.
Fourteen-year-old Corlando Morris is the top scorer for the 13-time champions, with nine goals so far, and will hope to get help from Kayvon Donaldson.
Munro College will hope to get the better of Alphansus Davis High — the last team to earn a spot in the round of 32 — while the STETHS vs William Knibb Memorial game at STETHS should also be interesting.
