Alphansus Davis, Cedric Titus complete qualifiers for d’Cup second round
ALPHANSUS Davis High and Cedric Titus High completed the qualifiers for the round of 32 in the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association/Wata daCosta Cup football competition after the preliminary stage ended on Monday.
Alphansus Davis High took the final ‘automatic’ qualifying spot after they held on for a 2-2 result against Bellefield High. That was the completion of their Zone G play-off game that had started last week.
Cedric Titus High took the lone spot available to the best third-placed team. They joined the 30 schools that had previously booked their places. The round of 32 phase is set to get underway with one game on Tuesday — Port Antonio High against Dinthill Technical at Carder Park.
Alphansus Davis, who were last in their group last season, finished their first-round schedule with 16 points. Alphansus Davis, formerly known as Spalding High, were making it past the first round for the first time since 2018.
Christiana High won Zone G with 28 points with Holmwood Technical second with 22.
For their efforts, Alphansus Davis will play in Group 4 of the round of 32 alongside Munro College, Maldon High and Brown’s Town High,
Cedric Titus High were third in Zone D, behind Spot Valley High and William Knibb. They edged out Green Pond High for the best third-place spot on goal difference. Both had accumulated 19 points from 10 games but Cedric Titus prevailed courtesy of a goal difference advantage of 27 to Green Pond High’s five.
Central High topped the tables in Zone H after playing out a 0-0 draw with defending champions Clarendon College. They finished on 20 points and will play in Group 6 in the second round.
Clarendon College took second place with 19 points, edging Denbigh High who beat Lennon High 4-1, on goal difference.
Clarendon College will play in Group 7 in which they will meet Glenmuir High, in a repeat of last season’s final. Also in Group 7 are Paul Bogle High and Titchfield High.
Denbigh High are drawn in Group 5, along with Belair High, Happy Grove High and Holmwood Technical.
Stevaughn Spence scored a second-straight hat-trick as Frome Technical topped Zone B with 26 points after beating Green Island High 4-0 in their return game.
Dwyane Watt scored the other goal for Frome Technical who will play in Group 2. Ocho Rios High, Black River High and Cedric Titus are also in Group 2.
Rusea’s High took the runners-up spot behind Frome after beating Knockalva Technical 5-1 in Lucea, with Michael Foga scoring a hat-trick. Rusea’s are set to play out of Group 1 against Cornwall College, Spot Valley High and Kemps Hill High.
