Wolmer’s Waite eyes deep Manning Cup run
HAVING secured their path to the second round of the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association/Digicel Manning Cup competition, Wolmer’s Boys’ Head Coach Jerome Waite says the aim is to go very deep in the tournament.
Wolmer’s, who are unbeaten this season, played out a 1-1 result with St Jago High in their Zone E encounter at Mico playing field on Saturday.
Daquan Duhaney scored for Wolmer’s in the 59th minute, however Chazray Johnson netted the equaliser for St Jago in the 60th minute.
Wolmer’s only had themselves to blame for failing to collect all three points on their home turf, after they squandered a number of clear-cut opportunities.
With one round of matches remaining in the zone Wolmer’s lead the standings with 25 points, one ahead of second-place Tivoli Gardens High. They are ahead of St Jago (16), Denham Town High (seven), St Mary’s College (five) and Edith Dalton James High (one).
Waite said they should have won Saturday’s match comfortably.
“Overall, I wasn’t pleased with the performance because, based on the number of chances that we created, we should have won this game,” he said.
“It [the draw] will not be a problem for us because, based on our eight consecutive wins, we have already advanced to the second round,” Waite added.
He noted the team’s longer-term aim.
“The objective is to see how far we can go. We have already cleared one hurdle, which is to advance to the second round, and so we just have to take it from here,” said the veteran coach.
Waite noted that they have assembled a very young team for this year’s competition and they are still learning the game. He expects them to continue to improve when the second round comes around.
“But these youth have to understand that when they get teams to deal with they need to make use of those opportunities. Today they didn’t and as a result, the game drew 1-1,” he said.
“We just have to just continue working because these are youngsters, and we know it is a development programme, and once you get these players in the right frame of mind I think, on any given day, they will deliver,” he added.
St Jago High still stand a chance of advancing to the second round as one of the best third-placed teams. Their coach, Taniel McKenzie, said he was pleased with the performance against Wolmer’s.
“We could have done better but it is a fair result for us. I think we came out and we didn’t give Wolmer’s a chance to play because we worked very hard, and I am proud of the team’s performance,” he said.
“We still have a chance of going through to the second round because we have Denham Town in our last game and we are going there for that win,” McKenzie declared.
