St Mary L P Martin cricket promises exciting clashes
TWO big clashes are scheduled to take place in the L P Martin Funeral Home St Mary 35-over Elite cricket competition on Sunday.
At Boscobel Oval, starting at 10:00 am, upstart Geddes Town are set to battle home team Boscobel United, one of the favourites to lift the trophy.
Boscobel will be led by former national player Alwyn Williams and includes one of the parish’s most exciting young prospects, Zendai Williams, who hit a century in the Jamaica Cricket Association 50-over competition recently.
Other standout players in the star-studded Boscobel team are Portland parish representative Robert Weir and Maurice Harrow who cracked 147 last week for Police against Jamaica Defence Force.
Both Zendai and attacking left-hander Alwyn have been in superlative form this season, with the latter holding the reputation as one of the most feared batsmen in the parish.
The Boscobel bowing with be spearheaded by Dwayne Hamilton.
Geddes Town boasts a host of young players and will look to Under-15 standout Devonte Miller to set the early pace for them.
In the feature match of the competition — which is also sponsored by Costley Construction, Sandals Dunn’s River and Sandals Royal Plantation — Mango Valley are set to square off against Social Development Commission Twenty20 parish champions Gayle. The Gayle team includes St Mary parish players Sheldon Pryce, Jermaine Chisholm, Javere Green, Marlon Byfield, Aan Ennis and Jevaughn Hinds.
Skipper Pryce said he team is confident and looking forward to a keen tussle with the Mango Valley team.
“We do not underrate any team and we will be going into the game respecting our opponents,” Pryce noted.
Junior Mattison, first vice-president of St Mary Cricket Association, said he is pleased with the standard of play seen so far in the competition and the heightened spectator interest. He expressed the association’s appreciation for the level of discipline exhibited by the players, which he said augurs well for the future of the sport.
