Harlequin Cup, Skanking Trophy vie for the spotlight at Caymanas
Saturday’s Harlequin Cup main attraction, featuring a clash between Sensational Move and Madelyn’s Sunshine, may be eclipsed by the highly anticipated Reggae Skanking Sweet Trophy on the 10-race card.
This native-bred three-year-old maiden special weight event boasts a staggering $2-million bonus, in addition to its $1.05-million purse.
As race 2 in series 3 of the Betting, Gaming, and Lotteries Commission (BGLC)/Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA) Millionaire Series, connections will be vying for the lucrative bonus.
The General, trained by Gary Subratie, won race 1, but was ineligible for the $1-million bonus due to not passing through the 2022 TOBA Mixed Sales.
The carry-over effect has resulted in a record-breaking $2-million bonus, making this the richest-ever three-year-old maiden event at Caymanas Park.
Himaya, trained by Jason DaCosta and ridden by Tevin Foster, has been tipped to take the top spot.
Blood Moon, Happy Force, and Mila Kay are expected to provide stiff competition in what promises to be an exciting Reggae Skanking Sweet Trophy.
The Reggae Skanking Sweet Trophy is positioned as the 10th and final event on the day with a post time of 5:10 pm. First race is at 11:30 am.
The $1.4-million Harlequin Trophy, an Open Allowance contest for three-year-olds and upward over 5 furlongs (1,000m) straight, promises to be a thrilling showdown between Gary Subratie’s Sensational Move and Jason DaCosta’s Madelyn’s Sunshine, which are the clear favourites, boasting impressive records and a thirst for victory.
Sensational Move is a proven course specialist. The chestnut colt’s last two victories have come over this distance under 1 minute. On February 17, he ran 59.2 and on September 7, he ran 59.4. He is expected to be a strong contender for victory. Dane Dawkins will ride Sensational Move.
After a disappointing seventh-place finish in the None Such Trophy on September 14, five-year-old American-bred dark bay/brown mare Madelyn’s Sunshine looks to rebound in the Harlequin Trophy. She finished 28 lengths behind Desert of Malibu, Wall Street Trader, and Is That A Fact over six furlongs (1,200m).
However, stepping down in class and entering this contest in good condition, Madelyn’s Sunshine is poised to make a strong impact. Her training has been impressive, and she’s expected to fight out the finish. Tevin Foster has the leg up on Madelyn’s Sunshine.
The remaining runners in the six-horse field are Sistren Treasure, Ability, Fearless Soul, and Inspire Force.
