Chicken bone quarrel gets man suspended sentence
MONTEGO BAY, St James — A man accused of injuring another who accidentally hit him with a chicken bone received a suspended sentence when he appeared in the St James Parish Court on Wednesday.
Dennis Plummer was answering to charges of unlawful wounding.
Before delivering her verdict, presiding Judge Natiesha Fairclough-Hylton asked Plummer if he wanted to address the court before being sentenced. He expressed remorse for his actions.
After a look at the results of a court-ordered social enquiry, the judge appeared to suggest that the defendant lost control.
“It is not a bad report, but it is unfortunate that you did not manage your anger well,” she told Plummer.
“You should have controlled your temper. At the end of the day, we have the complainant suffering a wound to his eye so that he has to be receiving treatment in Kingston,” the judge chastised.
She considered Plummer’s prompt admission of guilt and decided to impose an 18-month prison sentence, which was then suspended for two years.
“You will not go to prison at this time, but if you commit an offence within the next two years, you will go to prison for this 18 months,” Fairclough-Hylton explained before allowing Plummer to leave the courtroom.
According to evidence presented by the prosecution, the incident occurred in Spring Mount around 12:30 am on July 14.
At the time, the complainant was at a shop consuming beverages and chicken. He reportedly discarded a chicken bone outside the shop, which inadvertently struck the accused.
Plummer subsequently used a knife to strike the complainant above his left eye, resulting in a wound.
