Young Jamaican David Brown blazes trail in go-karting
There has been growing interest in the local go-karting scene and 11-year-old David Brown is contributing to that momentum and hoping to reach the pinnacle of motorsports.
Young Brown, who attends Mona Preparatory School, has established himself as one of the most consistent drivers on the Jamaican circuit with frequent podium finishes. Last month, he showcased his promising talent when he won the minimax category at the AMR Homestead race meet in Florida, United States.
Brown says he’s thrilled with his constant improvement after falling in love with the sport six years ago.
“I attended a JKA (Jamaica Karting Association) race meet in 2018 with my parents when I was six years old. The competition, the kart, and the speed all attracted me to the sport,” he said. “I’m pleased with my progression, as I have improved my lap times, won several races, and achieved podium finishes in the 50cc, Micromax, and Minimax classes. I look forward to further progression and achieving all I can in motorsports.”
In 2023, Brown finished second in the local karting championship, behind defending champion Brandon Shor.
However, under the guidance of coach and former karting champion Collin Daley Jr and personal trainer Bruce Chin, Brown is hoping to be in peak condition to further improve his status.
“One of the biggest challenges is maintaining fitness and stamina, as go-kart racing requires high levels of fitness and focus. I will continue to train and condition myself through kickboxing and other activities,” said Brown.
Brown isn’t willing to settle for just local success; he’s also hoping to breakthrough internationally and make the Formula 1 circuit.
“My biggest dream in karting is to participate in and win the international WSK Karting Championships, which represent the pinnacle of the sport. I see myself competing in Formula 1 (F1),” he said. “One of the people I look up to is seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton, as he started in karting and encourages people to be the best they can be.”
Though young himself, Brown offered some words of encouragement for aspiring karters.
“My advice to new karters would be that focus and passion are necessary. Your first race may definitely not be your best race, but believe in yourself and work towards achieving your dreams.”
Brown is set to return to the track later this month when JKA hosts their ninth race meet on October 27 at the Palisadoes Track in Kingston.
