Race for daCosta Cup progress continues
A total of eight schools will be seeking four spots to the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association/Wata daCosta Cup football round of 32 when action continues with 16 games scheduled to be played.
With the first round of the competition quickly winding down, 20 schools have already secured their spots in the next round with most of the other 12 spots expected to be taken between Friday and Saturday.
The top three teams from five zones with seven or more schools require an in-zone play-off to advance. The top two teams from the other eight zones will automatically qualify, while the last remaining spot will be given to the best third-place finisher.
On Friday, William Knibb Memorial are to travel to Cedric Titus as both will battle for the one remaining spot from Zone D; Alphansus Davis High and Bellefield High are set to meet to decide the third spot from Zone G; Browns Town have the edge over Marcus Garvey Technical in Zone K; and St Mary High and St Mary Technical face off for the third spot in Zone M.
William Knibb, on 22 points, need only a draw against Cedric Titus to join Spot Valley High as the qualifiers from Zone D. But William Knibb are expected to work hard for it despite winning the previous meeting 3-0.
Cedric Titus (19 points) are unbeaten at home this year, with three wins and a draw. They have outscored their opposing teams 15-2, with the two goals coming in a 2-2 draw against Spot Valley High. A win today would give them the edge on goal-difference as both teams would end on 22 points.
Both William Knibb and Cedric Titus have combined to score 71 goals in the zone, but William Knibb have conceded just a single goal in nine games. That goal was conceded in a loss at home to Spot Valley.
Spot Valley High, meanwhile, can take zone honours for the first time in seven years with a win over Discovery Bay High.
Alphansus Davis High will need only a draw against Bellefield High today to take the third qualifying spot in Zone G.
Alphansus Davis have 15 points, two more than Bellefield High who must win to join Christiana High and Holmwood Technical.
Browns Town, who are coming off a loss to Ocho Rios High on Wednesday, are in second place on 19 points. They need a point to join Ocho Rios High from Zone K.
Marcus Garvey Technical are, however, still in contention, on 16 points and a goal-difference of two. But they will need a massive margin of victory to pass Browns Town who have a goal-difference of 10.
Ocho Rios High are expected to wrap up zone honours when they play away to York Castle High.
A point would suffice for St Mary High (12 points) in their play-off game against St Mary Technical (10 points). St Mary High had beaten St Mary Technical 4-0 earlier in the season.
St Mary Technical would, however, sneak into the the second round with a win, despite have a negative goal-difference.
A flood of goals are expected in the Zone F games involving joint leaders Belair High and Manchester High, who are locked on 24 points each, but separated by goal-difference.
Belair High, who beat May Day High 1-0 in their first-leg game, have a goal-difference of 34, while Manchester High, who have a goal-difference of 27, had beaten deCarteret College 2-0 in their first meeting.
Dinthill Technical could win Zone J yet again with a win over Charlemont High whom they had beaten 6-0 in their previous encounter.
