Nugent reaches milestone: 100 career wins at Caymanas Park
Jockey Oshane Nugent celebrated the achievement of his 100th career winner at Caymanas Park aboard four-year-old grey filly Tequila Flight on Sunday, October 6, 2024, at Caymanas Park.
Years of dedication and hard work culminated in this occasion, as Nugent secured victory aboard the Steven Todd trainee in the fifth race, a maiden condition event for native-bred four-year-olds and upward over 7 furlongs (1,400m).
Tequila Flight dominated the competition, crossing the finish line 14 ¼ lengths ahead of Jack Daniel (Everton Stone) and Sicario Man (Jermar Jackson). The winning time was 1:32.4.
“Winning 100 races at Caymanas Park is a really great feeling,” Nugent shared with
The Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide.
“I’m happy, and it’s rejoicing. It’s the result of hard work and dedication. Success only comes with hard work, and I’m all up for that,” he added.
Nugent expressed gratitude to his support network.
“I thank everyone – owners, trainers, fellow jockeys, grooms, racing fans, family, and friends. Without them, this wouldn’t have been possible. I’m forever grateful,” the former two-time champion apprentice said.
Commenting on the performance of Tequila Flight, Nugent said: “I rode her for the first time in a race today. I didn’t know much about her, but after morning works, I told the trainer she’s fit and ready. He put her in this race, and we got the job done.”
Nugent’s fascination with horse racing began as a young boy, watching races at Caymanas Park. Inspired by local legends, he joined the racing fraternity as an apprentice jockey in 2019.
Nugent rode his first career winner aboard Raw Liquid, owned by DSTL & Associates and trained by Rowan Mathie, on February 8, 2020. This breakthrough sparked a series of successes for Nugent.
“It was a very good feeling winning my first race. It was a dream come true for me as well and I will always remember my first winner,” he said.
“My career has been great so far. There were some ups and downs but I am still going through with the help of God and so I cannot complain,” the Cumberland High School graduate said.
