Fire setter’s case resolved through mediation
MONTEGO BAY, St James — A man who admitted to setting a fire under his uncle’s house because he was playing his music too loud has resolved the matter through mediation.
Renardo Brown, who was in custody, appeared in the St James Parish Court on Wednesday to face a charge of attempted arson.
Defence attorney Martyn Thomas informed the court that, according to instructions from his client, the uncle has a tendency to disrupt the peace with excessively loud music, prompting Brown to retaliate.
Presiding judge Natiesha Fairclough-Hylton enquired whether the parties were amenable to engaging in mediation, to which both agreed.
The proceedings were temporarily adjourned to allow the men to engage in mediation with a mediator in court, resulting in a mutually acceptable resolution.
With that, the prosecution offered no evidence against Brown.
“If you commit an offence and come back before me, it will not go like this,” Fairclough-Hylton told Brown before allowing him to leave.
According to the allegations, on May 22 the complainant was at his house when someone alerted him to a fire underneath the building.
He went to investigate and discovered a shopping bag containing a blue shirt on fire under the house. He extinguished the blaze.
The incident was reported to the police. Brown reportedly said, under caution, “Offica, mi talk to him about the loud music and him naah hear, so mi light the board.”
Brown was taken into custody and subsequently charged.
