Brit on drug rap given time to contact relatives, get lawyer
MONTEGO BAY, St James — A British man who allegedly tried to board a flight with cocaine worth approximately $2.4 million has been allowed time to find his relatives and have them help him get a lawyer.
Fifty-four-year-old Glenn McIrvine Mason, a counsellor and social worker from Bury St Edmunds, England, appeared in the St James Parish Court for the first time on Wednesday.
Upon learning that the defendant did not have legal representation, presiding judge Natiesha Fairclough-Hylton directed the investigating officer to assist him with a phone call so that he could contact his relatives and arrange for legal counsel.
The judge then remanded Mason until October 30.
Reports are that on September 30, Mason was attempting to board a flight to Gatwick, London when members of the Firearms and Narcotics Investigation Division intercepted him.
Upon searching his suitcase during check-in, officials reportedly found two pairs of slippers containing four packages filled with a white powdery substance resembling cocaine. The substance weighed approximately 1.5 pounds.
Mason was subsequently arrested and charged with possession of, dealing in, attempting to export and conspiracy to export cocaine.
