Spot Valley leads four more into d’Cup round of 32
HOLLAND, Trelawny — Spot Valley High are back in the second round of the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup football competition for the first time in seven years, after beating Holland High 4-1 in their Zone D return-round game played at Holland High on Tuesday.
The win, Spot Valley High’s seventh of the season, took them to 23 points and guarantees them a place in the round of 32 with a game to go.
The St James-based institution was among five schools that booked their spots yesterday, including Holmwood Tech, Titchfield High, McGrath High and Dinthill Technical.
Another seven schools, including former champions Frome Technical, Rusea’s High, Munro College and St Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS), can advance to the round of 32 today.
Frome Technical, the leaders in Zone B with 19 points, and second-place Rusea’s High on 16 points will meet for a second time in three days, this time in Lucea, after a 0-0 draw at Frome on Monday.
Both schools can advance with a win for Rusea’s High and a loss for third-place Anchovy High who have lost three consecutive games.
Black River High needs a point from their Zone C game against last-placed Godfrey Stewart High to join Manning’s School as the automatic qualifiers.
Black River High, who blanked Little London High 6-0 on Monday, are on 12 points, six more than Grange Hill High and Little London who will also meet today.
After missing out on Saturday, being held to a draw, Munro College will make a second attempt at advancing from Zone E. A point from second-placed BB Coke, who they beat 1-0 in the first round, would be sufficient.
A win for Munro College would leave the door open for STETHS, who have not been as consistent this year, to force their way through with a win over Newell High.
Kemps Hill High, on 15 points, can advance even with a loss from Zone I if Old Harbour fail to beat Garvey Maceo in their play-off game.
Glenmuir High, who are going after a ninth-straight win when they play Kemps Hill and Garvey Maceo, are already through but Kemps Hill would get the third spot if Old Harbour, who are on 11 points, fail to win.
The first qualifier from Zone K could be decided when the leaders — Brown’s Town on 19 points and Ocho Rios High on 18 points — meet at Drax Hall as the winners would book their place.
Yesterday, Orlando Wilson scored a hat-trick to lead Spot Valley High while Keyanta Clarke and Tyreek Kirlew scored the other goals.
Holmwood Tech were 2-0 winners over Bellefield High, improving to 22 points to join Christiana High as the first qualifiers from Zone G.
Titchfield High came from a goal down to beat St Mary Technical 2-1 and join Pt Antonio High from Zone M.
Aldane Walsh gave St Mary Tech the lead in the 14th minute but Titchfield responded with a goal from Bryan Williams in the 66th minute, with Riquelme Brown scoring the winner in the 68th minute.
McGrath High’s 4-1 win over Charlemont High eliminated them from contention in Zone J, so they advanced along with Dinthill Technical to the round of 32.
Green Pond High kept their hopes of advancing alive after upsetting qualifiers and zone winners Cornwall College 2-1 in their Zone A return-round game played at Cornwall College.
Jerome Whynn scored a first-round double as Green Pond avenged their first-round 5-2 loss, with Carlondo Morris scoring Cornwall College’s goal as their eight-game winning start came to an end.
Green Pond are on 18 points, the same as Maldon High who were also 2-1 winners over Herbert Morrison, setting up a winner-take-all game between Maldon and Green Pond on Saturday.
William Knibb Memorial and Cedric Titus remained in contention in Zone D after both scored 5-0 wins on Wednesday over Muschett High and Discovery Bay High, respectively.
