Sandals, SDC fete Steer Town senior citizens
DEMONSTRATING the true essence of community solidarity, Sandals Dunn’s River, Sandals Royal Plantation, the Social Development Commission (SDC), and a number of community stakeholders feted more than 100 senior citizens at the Steer Town Methodist Church Hall, St Ann, recently.
The event featured a range of activities designed to pamper and honour the senior members of the community, and attendees were treated to an array of services, including health checks by dedicated nurses who conducted blood sugar and blood pressure tests. They also received spa treatments and grooming from the resorts’ team members.
According to Ian Spencer, Sandals regional public relations manager, the treat exemplified a remarkable philanthropic endeavour, highlighting the deep-seated care and respect the community and stakeholders hold for the elders. “For the second year, it showcased the exceptional collaborative spirit of Sandals Resorts and the Social Development Commission. This initiative not only brought joy to the elderly members of the community but also underscored the importance of fostering intergenerational connections and honouring the wisdom of the past,” Spencer said.
Accompanied by several of her friends and sporting a broad smile, Tanya Morgan, an elderly resident of Steer Town, commented that: “People don’t often care for us old people so this effort was really appreciated and showed true community spirit. I came last year and this year was even better.”
Antoinette Ledgister-Hall, community coordinator of the Social Development Commission, underscored her organisation’s commitment to community building. “Our dedication to our elders goes beyond obligation; it’s a passion within us. We want to thank our partners for their community spirit in making this event a memorable one.”
The care also went beyond medical assistance as team members from both Sandals properties provided gentle hand and body massages, while relaxing hair-combing sessions added a revitalising touch to the elderly participants. The atmosphere was filled with laughter and joy as the community’s senior members relished a dedicated day of relaxation and recognition.
Omar Robinson, general manager at Sandals Royal Plantation, said, “We were happy to be a partner in this event as their stories offer a special perspective on how our society has changed, the obstacles they conquered, and the lasting values. Listening to our elders isn’t just being respectful — it’s an investment in our personal development and enriching our shared wisdom.”
Tameisha Johnson of the food and beverage department at Sandals Dunn’s River was pleased to be a part of the labour of love for the second year in a row. “Being a member of the Sandals team and contributing to the well-being of our seniors was truly rewarding. Seeing their smiles and hearing their stories reminded me of how much a small act of kindness can mean. These seniors have given a lot to our community, and it’s an honour to give back. This experience highlighted how important it is to connect with different generations and how compassion can make a real difference.”
And Deryk Meany, general manager of Sandals Dunn’s River, said: “Our elders embody wisdom, history, and experiences that have built our society’s core. Every wrinkle holds a story, each laugh carries memories, and each moment with them is a chance to celebrate their priceless contributions. Initiatives like the elderly treat offer not just pampering and joy but also uphold the values of respect, compassion, and community unity.”
Delapenha’s Funeral Services, M&M Modern Sewer, and Plantation Smoke House also contributed to the staging of the event.
