Nugent reaches milestone of 100 career wins
FANS watching Sunday’s nine-race card witnessed another thrilling milestone as jockey Oshane “Johnny” Nugent secured his 100th career victory aboard Tequila Flight in the fifth event on the nine-race programme.
Nugent, a two-time champion apprentice, etched his name in the history books with an emphatic win in the Maiden Condition race for native-bred four-year-olds and upward over seven furlongs (1,400m).
Tequila Flight dominated the competition, crossing the finishing line 14¼ lengths ahead of Jack Daniel (Everton Stone) and Sicario Man (Jemar Jackson). The impressive victory was sealed in a time of 1:32.4.
Nugent’s achievement stole the spotlight, overshadowing Perfect Brew’s mild upset in the Vassell “Jolly Man” Najir feature race.
Perfect Brew, running with the blinkers, came from behind runners to nail Money Market on the line in the $1.25-million Overnight Allowance event for three-year-olds and upward over five and a half furlongs (1,100m).
With former champion jockey Dane Dawkins in the saddle, Perfect Brew won the race by three parts of a length in a time of 1:06.4, his first win from five starts this season. Splits for the race were 23.3 x 47.4 x 1:00.1. Digital One (Raddesh Roman) finished in third place.
Trainer Anthony “Baba” Nunes and jockeys Shavon Townsend and Raddesh Roman continued their impressive form, each securing double wins on the card.
Nunes, fresh from a treble on the previous race day, saddled Prince Amaan (Omar Walker) in the seventh race and Babylove (Roman) in the eighth race for a total of five winners over the two days of racing.
Townsend’s double came aboard Adenosine (Enos Brown) in the second race and Funometer (Gregg Fennell) in the fourth race.
In addition to the triumph with Babylove, Roman was also successful aboard She’s Adorable (Carlton Cunningham) in the sixth race for his double.
Racing continues on Saturday.
