Coach Thomas relieved as Molynes gets first win of JPL season
AFTER guiding Molynes United to their first win since March, Head Coach Jermaine Thomas says the plan is to raise the level of performances in this season’s Wray and Nephew Jamaica Premier League.
Molynes United registered a comfortable 4-0 victory over newly promoted Chapelton Maroons at Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex on Sunday.
Despite starting the game slowly, Molynes led 1-0 heading into the half-time break, thanks to a 39th-minute strike from Jevaughn Brown.
They added three goals to their tally as a double from Mickel Graham and a late strike from Taraj Andrews pushed them to the three points. It ended their winless streak which stretched back to the latter part of the 2023/24 season.
Thomas hailed his offensive unit for ending the barren run.
“I think we were a little bit purpose-driven. We’re coming off two defeats so the third game had to be different. We spoke about it in training and we wanted to really come out and finish. We haven’t been finishing our chances because the two games before, we created a lot of chances and kept on missing — but today we were spot on,” he said.
Thomas also believes it was a must-win encounter, given promoted Chapelton’s lowly status in the JPL table.
“If you’re playing in the league and planning on achieving anything at all, then you have to be taking points like these. Chapelton were here two seasons ago and got relegated and now they’re back, so you want to win these games because the tougher ones are going to come. So, when they come [games they can win] you have to manage and get a point here and there, possibly three, but these games, you have to take them when you get them,” he said.
Although they avoided relegation last season Molynes had one of the worst records, finishing with just five wins and conceding 55 goals, the second-worst defensive record. However, Thomas is optimistic he can get the best out of the team this season.
“It’s all about the mental, getting in their head spaces and having them understanding; and reminding [them] about the objectives we would have set from preseason, making sure they keep on assessing themselves; and then setting the bar higher for them. Once we can get that done then we’ll be achieving some things,” he reasoned.
