Cornwall, Manning’s, Port Antonio through to d’Cup 2nd round
IRWIN, St James — Former champions Cornwall College led a trio of schools into the round of 32 of the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association/Wata daCosta Cup football competition, after wins on Saturday.
Cornwall College, Manning’s School and Port Antonio High all extended perfect win records as they joined Christiana High, Belair High, Manchester High and Glenmuir High in the second round.
Cornwall College sealed Zone A honours and joined Glenmuir High as the first schools to win their first eight games, after they beat hosts Irwin High 4-1 in their return fixture.
Kayvon Donaldson scored his fourth goal in three games to open the scoring while Nickane Brown scored in back-to-back outings. Carlondo Morris added his eighth goal of the season for Cornwall’s third, and Dante Escoffrey added the fourth. All their goals came in the first half.
Manning’s School won their seventh game in a row, blanking Little London High 6-0 with Javin Williams and Kajaye Williams leading the way with doubles. Daintom Williams and Ricardo Ricketts got the other goals.
Port Antonio High were 2-0 winners over St Mary Technical in their Zone M play-off game, securing their spot in the round of 32 with a seventh-straight win.
Glenmuir High underlined their dominance after beating Old Harbour High 4-0 in their Zone I play-off game.
Frome Technical raced to their sixth-straight win in Zone B, hammering Knockalva Technical 8-0, while Rusea’s High took over sole possession of second place after beating Cambridge High 3-1.
Anchovy High lost their third in a row, going down 1-2 at home to Green Island. Anchovy had begun the season by winning their first four games.
Munro College missed their first chance to qualify for the round of 32 after they were held 0-0 by Maggotty High. Elsewhere, St Elizabeth Technical rebounded from their loss to Lacovia High to beat BB Coke 3-1. St Elizabeth Technical moved into joint second place on 12 points, still six points adrift of Munro College.
Manchester High avenged their loss to Belair High earlier this season with a 1-0 triumph over their biggest Zone F rivals. Both schools are joint leaders of the zone and are already through to the next round.
Defending champions Clarendon College whipped Claude McKay High 7-0, their biggest margin of victory all year. In another game, Ocho Rios High were 8-1 winners over Ferncourt High.
