Motorcyclist collides with truck in fatal Brown’s Town crash
ST ANN, Jamaica— A 20-year-old motorcyclist died from injuries he sustained after colliding with a truck in Brown’s Town, St Ann on Friday.
He has been identified as Quami Howlet, a labourer of Philadelphia in Brown’s Town.
Police say the collision involved a Hi-rev motorcycle driven by Howlet and a white Forward Isuzu motor truck driven by Leonard Wilson of Minard Heights in Brown’s Town, St Ann.
Lawmen say around 8:30 am the motorcyclist overtook a line of traffic around a corner and collided with the motor truck.
The police were called to the scene and Howlet was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Deandre Allen, a resident of Brown’s Town who said he knew Howlet expressed sadness after learning the news.
“Is a youth me grow up with still and a good youth, him never pass me and no hail me, yeah man from box truck and marble days, just sad that this happen. RIP to a real G,” Allen said.
He urged road users to be cautious.
“When a your time a your time still you know, but anything you can do to stay alive you have to do that as best as possible. Me no sure what really happened, just hear that him meet in the crash and drop out, but this just show say every man have to be careful pon the tar,” he added.
Andrew McBean, a public transport operator who traverses the Ocho Rios to Brown’s Town route said while he did not know the deceased he is still shaken up by the incident.
McBean said he or any other public transport operator who traverses that area could have been involved in the crash.
He called on residents to be extremely careful while travelling in St Ann, especially on unfamiliar roadways.
“Me always tell them, when you a travel in St Ann you have to be alert cause is a dangerous parish when it come to crashes, and if you no know the road don’t even think about speeding or overtaking. [Me] no sure about the details of this crash but to see a young youth die like that is very sad,” he said
According to the Road Safety Unit, as of Friday October 4, 279 people have died on the nation’s roads.
St Ann has accounted for 31 of the 279 fatalities.
