Christiana through to daCosta Cup round of 32

William Knibb look to turn the tables on Spot Valley

Christiana High became the fourth school to qualify for the round of 32 of the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association/Wata daCosta Cup football competition after beating Bellefield High 3-0 in the Zone G play-off game at Christiana on Friday.

Christiana, who had beaten Bellefield High 7-0 a week ago in their regular season game, improved to 22 points and claimed one of the three qualifying spots from the group.

Nickoye Henry, Danray Cameron and Amani Hibbert scored for Christiana High as they join Belair High, Manchester High and Glenmuir High in the second round.

Holmwood Technical failed to advance after they were held 0-0 by Alphansus Davis High in their play-off game.

Brown’s Town High opened a four-point lead in Zone K after beating York Castle High 4-0 at Addison Park. They improved to 19 points, ahead of Ocho Rios High who have a game in hand.

At Drax Hall, Marcus Garvey Technical failed to close the gap on the leaders after they led 3-1 but had to settle for a 3-3 result with Aabuthnott Gallimore High.

On Saturday, five more teams, including three former champions, can advance to the round of 32 when the competition continues with 29 games — the most in any one day since the competition got underway a month ago.

Former champions Cornwall College, Munro College and Dinthill Technical can make progress along with Manning’s School. Port Antonio High, also on the cusp, are to open up their play-offs in Zone M.

Cornwall College have won their first seven games this season and could still advance without an eighth-straight victory, in the unlikely event that both Maldon High and Green Pond High, who are both tied for second place, also fail to win.

Cornwall (21 points) have a nine-point lead in Zone A, and a point against Irwin High, in the second game of a double header at Irwin, would be sufficient to see them advance.

Maldon High, who are in second place on goal-difference over Green Pond High, are to face St James High. Green Pond are set to host Herbert Morrison Technical.

Munro College, who lead Zone E with 17 points from seven games, will advance with a win over Maggotty High at Lacovia Community Centre.

Dinthill Technical and McGrath High, both joint top of Zone J on 10 points, are scheduled to clash. The winner will advance to the next round. Both teams could advance, if third-placed Charlemont High lose to Tacius Golding High.

Manning’s School have won their first six games to be on 18 points and lead Zone C by a healthy nine points. Another three more points when they play Little London in Savanna-la-Mar would see them win the zone with two games in hand.

Port Antonio High have won their first six games in Zone M, and if they beat St Mary Technical in their play-off game, they would take one of the three spots available from the zone in the next round.

Port Antonio, the top seed in the play-offs, had beaten St Mary Technical 3-0 in their first meeting this season.

Only one point separate leaders Spot Valley High and second-placed William Knibb Memorial when they meet in a Zone D return match at Spot Valley.

William Knibb will be hoping to avenge the 0-1 loss they suffered at home to Spot Valley. The Spot Valley team will be hoping to sweep the season series against the Trelawny-based school for the first time in years.
