Desert of Malibu, Funcaandun, Is That A Fact clash in Gold Cup
Tomorrow’s nine-race card is headlined by the prestigious 51st running of the Philip Feanny Gold Cup, the crown jewel of local handicap events.
This coveted Graded Stakes/Open Allowance contest has attracted a stellar field of 10 talented thoroughbreds vying for the lucrative $2.5-million purse.
The three-year-old and upward showdown features an impressive cast, including three talented American-bred runners, Desert of Malibu, Funcaandun, and Is That A Fact.
These international contenders will face off against seven other exceptional runners, promising a thrilling contest.
Below, the Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide takes a closer look at each runner and its chances of winning.
1. DESERT OF MALIBU (USA): (5 ch m by Malibu Moon – Lady Digger) – Seeks fourth consecutive win, showcasing exceptional form and consistency.
Desert of Malibu was an impressive winner of the 6-furlong (1,200m) None Such Trophy (1:10.4) on September 14, dominating rivals by 7 lengths. Carries top weight of 57.0kg (126 lb) here, but trainer Gary Subratie’s expertise is expected to minimise the impact.
2. WALL STREET TRADER (USA): (5 dk b/br g by Vancouver – Selva) – Finished a credible second to Desert of Malibu on September 14, demonstrating ability to compete at this level. Wall Street Trader is expected to do well here.
3. ATLANTIC CONVOY (CAN): (4 ch c Stormy Atlantic – My Sweet Emily) – Capable runner seeking minor placing, likely to find the going tough against more fancied opponents.
4. FUNCAANDUN (USA): (3 b c by Klimt – Fiftyshadesoffun) – Ultra-talented, boasting a two-race winning streak. Funcaandun won the Distinctly Irish Trophy (9 furlongs and 25 yards or 1,820m) on August 24 by 2 lengths, showcasing impressive speed and endurance. He returns well trained and poised for victory.
5. IS THAT A FACT (USA): (4 c by Palace Malice – Valid Code) – Finished third behind Desert of Malibu and Wall Street Trader over 6 furlongs. Is That A Fact will appreciate the extra furlong and is capable of turning the tables.
6. NORBLAR: (4 b c by Wannabeaplayer – Special Degree) – Faces significant challenge, unlikely to contend.
7. FURTHER AND BEYOND: (6 ch h by Blue Pepsi Lodge – Rumble) – Outclassed in this field, expected to struggle.
8. INTRESTNTIMESAHEAD: (3 b c by Bold Conquest – My Friend Lucy) – Returns from disappointing fourth-place finish in the Jamaica Derby on August 6 over 12 furlongs (2,400m). Intrestntimesahead has been timely prepared for this race and is expected to improve.
9. BANADURA: (3 b f by Casual Trick – Esperanza) – Jamaica Oaks winner, but out of her depth here.
10. MAJOR DANGER (USA): (4 b c by Majestic City – Clean Eleven) – In-form foreigner with three consecutive wins. Major Danger’s streak is likely to end against stronger opposition here.
