Christiana, Holmwood on the verge of d’Cup progress
Former champions Cornwall win seventh game in a row
Christiana High and Holmwood Technical High are poised to book their places in the round of 32 of the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association/Wata daCosta Cup football competition when the Zone G play-offs get underway with two games.
Wins for Christiana High and Holmwood Technical over Bellefield High and Alphansus Davis High, respectively, would ensure qualification to the next round.
Christiana lead with 19 points, one more than Holmwood Technical would put them in unassailable positions.
Christiana beat Bellefield High 7-0 in their first meeting last week, while Holmwood Technical edged Alphansus Davis High 1-0 in their previous encounter.
With three teams set to advance, it would not be the end of the road for any school that loses today.
Two teams have already secured progress to the round of 32. Belair High qualified on Wednesday, while Glenmuir High have already advanced despite having to participate in a Zone I play-off.
Glenmuir High won their first seven games and cannot finish lower than third place in Zone I from which three teams will advance.
Zone K leaders Brown’s Town High will hope to create some space ahead of Ocho Rios High when they host York Castle High in a return game at Addison Park.
Browns Town, who beat York Castle High 1-0 in the first round, lead the zone with 16 points, one more than Ocho Rios High.
In another game, third-placed Marcus Garvey Technical, who are still in the hunt for a spot in the round of 32, will host Aabuthnott Gallimore, who they beat 2-1 earlier this season.
On Thursday, Cornwall College extended their record to seven-straight wins in Zone A after a 4-1 triumph over Herbert Morrison Technical. The result was the same when the teams clashed earlier this season.
Kayvon Donaldson followed up his first goal in Tuesday’s win over Maldon High with a double on Thursday. Nickane Brown had opened the scoring for Cornwall, while Deshaun Talbert got the fourth goal from the penalty spot.
Jevar Beckford scored Herbert Morrison’s consolation.
Maldon High and Green Pond High stayed locked in a close race for the second qualifying spot after 1-0 and 2-0 wins over Irwin High and St James High, respectively.
Both are tied on 12 points, with Maldon High ahead on goal difference.
Dinthill Technical joined McGrath High on 10 points at the top of Zone J after a 4-0 win over Tacius Golding High.
