The 2024/25 NFL Season: Hard to predict
We’re already quarter-way through the 2024-25 National Football League (NFL) regular season and if ever there was a season hard to predict, this is it. The reigning champions, the Kansas City Chiefs, and the Minnesota Vikings are the only undefeated teams, with a perfect 4-0 record, and the Jacksonville Jaguars are the only team without a win. Mixed between those highs and that low is a hodgepodge of wins and losses that have the pundits in a tailspin.
Last weekend had its usual serving of highlight reels, including the performance of Washington Commanders’ rookie quarterback (QB) Jayden Daniels, with his passing completion percentage of 82.1 being the best four-game start to a season of any QB in league history, leading his team to their first 3-1 start since 2011. And following last weekend, Daniels is the first QB in NFL history to complete at least 85 per cent of his passes in two consecutive games (with a minimum of 15 attempts).
Washington has scored 38 or more points in the last two games (38 and 42, respectively), a feat they last achieved in 1991, when they went on to win the Super Bowl. They turn their attention to the Cleveland Browns (1-3) this Sunday, who are struggling through offensive inconsistencies and key injuries. The balanced air and ground game of the Commanders should again be on full display at FedEx Field, particularly with Cleveland’s Pro Bowl pass rusher, Myles Garrett, dealing with injuries.
Entering the weekend as JustBet favourites, the Commanders are averaging 30.3 points per game while surrendering 21.8 points per contest. They are expected to overwhelm a limping Cleveland defence and take their win streak to four, after losing their opening game in Week 1.
There was also Derrick Henry of the Baltimore Ravens, who steamrolled the Buffalo Bills into submission, handing them their first loss of the season, while the Baltimore defensive cordon resembled the earth-moving force they displayed last year. Henry racked up 199 rushing yards — with two touchdowns — that put him on the cusp of two major career milestones; he needs 18 yards to reach 10,000 career rushing yards and he’s one touchdown away from 100 in his career. The performance included an 87-yard touchdown run; the longest scoring run in Ravens franchise history.
Additionally, the Ravens, last Sunday, achieved a couple of remarkable statistics that should give all NFL defensive coordinators nightmares. They are the first team in NFL history to outrush their opponents by at least 100 yards in each of their first four games, and the duo of Henry and QB Lamar Jackson have combined for 788 rushing yards on the season, the most in NFL history by a QB and running back duo through four weeks.
The Ravens (2-2) have won two games in a row, after starting the season 0-2, and will visit Paul Brown Stadium to tackle the Cincinnati Bengals (1-3) on Sunday afternoon. The Bengals registered their first win last Sunday, defeating the Carolina Panthers 34-24, but had to claw tooth and nail to keep out their opponents in the fourth quarter. The Ravens rank first in the NFL in yards per game (429.5) and rushing yards per game (220.3) this season, while their defense has allowed 22 points per game. Expect Henry to reach his landmarks and the Ravens to continue their upward trajectory. Unfortunately, this will mean 1-4 for the Bengals.
Not to be outdone, the Chiefs, who have made it a habit of casting doubt during the regular season and have left the result of the four games played to the final, breathtaking seconds, shut out the Los Angeles Chargers in the last three quarters last Sunday for a 17-10 victory. Tight end Travis Kelce, after making only eight catches for 69 yards in the first three games, had seven receptions for 89 yards as he passed Hall-of-Fame tight end Tony Gonzalez for the franchise record, bettering the mark of 916 catches with 922.
Kelce, who turns 35 tomorrow, Saturday, is closing in on Gonzalez’s record of 77 touchdown receptions — he has 74 — and is just seven behind Priest Holmes’ Chiefs record of 84 total touchdowns. He will have an opportunity on Monday night to inch closer when the New Orleans Saints (2-2) come visiting in the hostile environment of Arrowhead Stadium. The Saints started the season with turbo in their cleats, leading the league in scoring over the first two games with 91 total points, but have since lost two in a row, scoring 36 total points in that span.
The Kansas City offence is without their top two wide receivers (Rashee Rice and Marquise Brown), their top two running backs (Isiah Pacheco and Clyde Edwards-Helaire), and have had performance issues at left tackle, but they still have a two-time league Most Valuable Player (MVP), two-time Super Bowl MVP, four-time conference champ, and three-time Super Bowl champion in QB Patrick Mahomes, who usually seems to find a way.
New Orleans has looked good offensively, in spurts, but the strength of this year’s Chiefs has been their defence, and the game will be played in Kansas City, where the Chiefs have one of the league’s best home field records. Additionally, Mahomes has a 21-5 record against National Football Conference (NFC) opponents in his career, a 7-3 record in Monday night games, and Derek Carr, the Saints QB, has a deflating 1-8 record against the Chiefs over the span where he led the Las Vegas Raiders. All indications point to a third-straight loss for the Saints, and the Chiefs going to 5-0.
The Buffalo Bills, Seattle Seahawks and Pittsburgh Steelers lost their first game of the season last weekend, while the Cincinnati Bengals and Tennessee Titans are off the schneid, but the Vikings have surprised everyone with their first 4-0 start since 2016. They downed the New York Giants, San Francisco 49ers, Houston Texans and Green Bay Packers, averaging 29 points per game, while allowing only 14.75.
They travel to the grounds of Tottenham Hotspur in London as the home team, for a Sunday morning clash with the New York Jets (2-2), where they are expected to stay true to the favoured position offered by JustBet. The Jets suffered their second loss of the season last Sunday to the rookie-led Denver Broncos, in one of the ugliest 10-9 score lines one could imagine, and the offensive line of the Jets has shown very little in the way of protecting their 40-year-old QB Aaron Rodgers. The Minnesota defence should be cooking in London and QB Sam Darnold should be offering up some highlights, along with receiver Justin Jefferson. Are you ready for some football?
