Man wanted to kill himself when he heard of son’s murder
BETHEL TOWN, Westmoreland — The killing of four men and the injuring of four others has left the usually quiet community of New Road in Bethel Town in shock, with families in pain as they try to come to grips with their loss.
Three of the victims were identified as Odane Scott, otherwise called Moses; 41-year-old tiler Damion Baker; and Rocky Lawrence. The fourth victim was unidentified up to press time Tuesday.
While the aunt of Scott tried to cope with the loss, her brother, who is the father of the 29-year-old, wanted to take his own life after receiving the news of his only son’s death. He has six daughters.
The distressed father thought of drowning himself in a water tank on the premises.
“One Of my brothers called me and said I should go and check on him because he was here like he was getting out of his mind. All his intention was to jump into the tank. Other family members talked to him and tried to get him to calm down. After a while I came around here and tried to cheer him up,” the aunt told the Jamaica Observer under condition of anonymity.
“He said that he does not know if he’s going to make it because it is his one son and to know that he has gone that way it is very hard for him,” added the aunt, who noted that her brother was doing much better since friends and others have come around.
The news was also devastating for the aunt.
“It is very hard. Very, very hard. Because when I heard last night my body was in an ague. I was just shaking like a leaf. I could not even hold the phone in my hand the way I was shaking. Oh my God! I really miss Moses,” stated the aunt who tried to hold back tears as her voice weakened.
Scott was a well-loved licensed electrician who at times would offer his service free of cost to those in need.
He reportedly bought thousands of dollars worth of tools for a job he had just received but never got the chance to use them.
One of Scott’s customers heard about his death and called the aunt.
“A lady called me this morning and told me that she heard that Moses died. I told her yes and she broke down in tears. She said she had some work for Moses to come and do for her,” relayed the aunt.
“Moses was a loving and friendly guy. Anybody could rely on Moses. Any electrical problems you had, you call him. If it is not something big, he would just do it and not charge. Even at church, he did work,” she added. The aunt told the Observer that while he was not a Christian, Scott grew up in church and maintained his faith.
He leaves behind a one-month-old son — his only child — who will now have to grow up with only passed-down memories of his father, a family trend.
The aunt’s father died when she was two-years-old, while Scott’s grandfather died two weeks before his father was born. Both fathers were ill when they died.
To complicate things for Scott’s family, they lost another family member recently and the grave digging is yet to take place. Now the family will have to dig two graves.
The Bethel Town police said about 10:20 pm patrons were gathered at a bar in Bethel Town when a black Fielder motor car drove up and several armed men alighted from the vehicle and opened gunfire.
Police were called to the scene and when they arrived eight people were seen with gunshot wounds. All eight were taken to hospital where four men were pronounced dead.
The police said the unidentified man is believed to be one of the men who came with the gunmen in the vehicle and was accidentally shot by his cronies.
Monday’s killing is reportedly the second incident to rock the usually quiet community.
Approximately three months ago, a St James woman who operated a business in the area was shot and killed. She had a case in court but it was not clear if the shooting has anything to do with the court case. Her business place was located on the opposite side of the road where the four were killed on Monday.
