Belair, Ocho Rios on cusp of progressing in daCosta Cup
Cornwall clip Maldon to extend winning streak
BELAIR High and Ocho Rios High could be the first two teams to secure second-round spots in the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association/Wata daCosta Cup football competition, with wins away to Mount St Joseph Catholic and Aabuthnott Gallimore High, respectively, on Wednesday.
Both Belair and Ocho Rios boast perfect win records and are leading their respective zones and both are expected to win to confirm their places in the round of 32.
Belair, who are seeking to win their zone for the first time, had edged Mount St Joseph in the first round and will start favorites to win the return game.
Ocho Rios High are also on a tear so far, scoring 38 goals in their six wins. A draw this afternoon against Aabuthnott Gallimore, whom they beat 4-0 in the first round, would be enough to see them advance.
Manning’s School could also advance with a win but will need favourable results elsewhere.
Play-off spots will be at stake in Zone H when Central High seek to rebound from their first loss of the season. They are scheduled to play Claude McKay High.
On Tuesday, Cornwall College won their sixth-straight game in Zone A, holding off Maldon High 2-1 in their return fixture in Montego Bay. Cornwall have opened up a nine-point lead over Maldon and Green Pond who are tied on nine points each.
Carlando Morris gave Cornwall College the lead just before half-time, scoring in his fourth-straight game to take his tally on the season to seven goals.
Kenroy Thorpe equalised for Maldon High but Kayvon Donaldson ensured Cornwall College took home all three points.
At Jarrett Park, St James High completed their game against Herbert Morrison Technical to prevail 4-1. They had led 3-0 after 30 minutes when the match was prematurely called off on Friday due to heavy rain and lightning.
Spot Valley High stayed top of Zone D with 16 points after a 6-1 win over Muschett High, thanks to a double from Keyanta Clarke, one each from Chrisano Lawrence, Orlando Wilson, Stevan Mullins, and an own goal.
William Knibb Memorial blanked Discovery Bay High 4-0 to stay a point behind Spot Valley High.
