Shaw scores winner as Man City down Brighton in WSL
MANCHESTER, England (CMC) — A lone strike from Jamaican international Khadija “Bunny” Shaw was enough to give Manchester City their first win of the new Women’s Super League (WSL) season on Sunday.
Shaw, Manchester City’s all-time leading goalscorer, netted in the 44th minute to lift her side to a 1-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion at the Joie Stadium.
It was her third goal in two games after scoring a brace in last week’s second leg Champions League qualifier against Paris FC, which City won 3-0.
Kerstin Casparij teed up Shaw perfectly just in front of goal and the striker only had to flick the ball in and send the hosts ahead on the stroke of half-time.
Brighton had caused problems in the first half by efficiently playing out from the back, but City stepped up a gear in the second half and had chances to increase their advantage.
A brilliant block by Guro Bergsvand denied Shaw a brace and Lauren Hemp was a lively presence in the opposition box.
However, Shaw took a knock attempting to convert a Hemp cross and after receiving some medical attention on the pitch was replaced by Mary Fowler.
The win was City’s first of the campaign after drawing 2-2 with Arsenal in their opener.
