Race for places intensifies as daCosta Cup resumes
The race for places in the second round of the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/Wata daCosta Cup football competition intensifies when the competition continues with 26 games following Saturday’s postponement because members of the Jamaica Football Referees Association (JFRA) withdrew their services.
The matches were pushed back after the referees refused to take up their whistles and flags, demanding a meeting with ISSA to discuss security concerns.
The JFRA pointed out a number of incidents, including the alleged assault of match officials in two instances this season, and an emergency meeting was held on Saturday when the go-ahead was given for Monday afternoon’s restart.
Meanwhile, five of the competition’s 13 zones include more than six teams. The format requires the top four teams in those zones to enter a three-game play-off to decide the top two qualifiers.
Three teams have secured their places in Zone G, while Glenmuir, the only one from Zone I to have qualified so far, face Vere Technical. Happy Grove High have secured the top spot in Zone L, while Port Antonio High and Titchfield High are through from Zone M.
Holmwood Technical, Zone G leaders, with a perfect 18 points from six wins, need only a draw against second-placed Christiana High to take top spot. Both have already secured their spots alongside Alphansus Davis High.
Fourth-placed Bellefield High need only a point against Alston High to take the other available place.
