Manchester students benefit from 13th annual Chudleigh Path JAS/Wilfred ‘Jacksie’ Reid scholarship
FOR the thirteenth consecutive year students at Chudleigh Path Early Childhood Institute are benefiting from a scholarship fund that over the years has improved early childhood education in two deep-rural communities in north-east Manchester.
The Chudleigh Path branch of the Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS), Devon Missionary Church, and the Wilfred “Jacksie” Reid/Michael Richards Scholarship Fund (WJRSF) recently partnered in granting the scholarship and workbooks to students.
The WJRSF was established in 2012 as a partnership with Chudleigh Path JAS branch to honour the life and work of Jacksie Reid, a community stalwart, by providing financial assistance to strong performing, less fortunate high school-entering students in the Chudleigh/Devon area of Manchester who require monetary support for covering the cost of their education. The partnership has grown over the years to include sponsorship from the Michael Richards family.
Since its inception, three-year scholarships have been awarded after a rigorous interview process to the top performing student whose parents, grandparents, or guardians are active members of the Chudleigh Path JAS branch.
“In fact, there are no losers, as the runners-up are also given monetary and educational material support,” a statement from the scholarship organisers said.
Jayuda Gordon, received a three-year scholarship towards attending Holmwood Technical High School. A total of $250,000 in cash and educational material were donated during this year’s presentation.
Chairman of WJRSF Franklin Reid commended the organisers of the event.
“The participation and camaraderie of members of the Chudleigh Path JAS branch has improved and the awards ceremony has grown over the years,” he said.
