Inmate dies at hospital after reported jail beating
KINGSTON, Jamaica – A 57-year-old inmate who was taken to the Kingston Public Hospital after he was reportedly beaten in police custody, died at the institution Sunday morning.
The now-deceased, Patrick Perry, from Long Bay in Portland, reportedly succumbed to the injuries he received. He had been at the hospital since September 21, 2024.
Information reaching Observer Online indicated that two Saturdays ago, Perry was found unresponsive in his cell and taken to the Annotto Bay Hospital.
He was reportedly transported to KPH on the same day, the police said.
Examinations by doctors revealed that Perry had extensive injuries to the ribs, lungs and head and a laceration to the kidney which suggested he was badly beaten.
He was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and succumbed to his injuries on Sunday.
The Independent Commission of Investigations has been informed of the matter and has launched an investigation, the police confirmed.
