Howard Ward’s Love Garden Part 1
The name Howard Ward is well-known within a number of spheres in Jamaican society, including construction, entertainment, power generation, philanthropy, and sports. Those closest to him will know that he is always challenging himself with new hobbies that have ranged from cycling, bodybuilding, tennis and photography. However, gardening is one that he’s extremely passionate about as the genesis of his business life stemmed from his chosen path as a professional landscaper.
This passion led him to creating his Love Garden in Ironshore, Montego Bay, a sanctuary filled with various plant types including orchids, palms, bromeliads as well other plant species.
“The passion that drove the creation of the Love Garden came from me being a professional landscaper, love of horticulture and a dream of growing an orchid garden. I was unsuccessful several times trying to grow an orchid garden, but this time around with more research and support from members of the orchid societies, I was able to create this space,” Ward explained.
“I love nature, from planting to watching them transition, giving beautiful blooms and all the challenges it takes to do that. We source plants from the various shows, other people’s gardens, as well as well-wishers who like the idea of the space will assist in securing plants. We always have an abundance of plants to choose from but I ensure we choose the right ones. The variety within the garden is vast, so now we have to try and secure more of the rare species and the native Jamaican orchids so that we can preserve them,” Ward added.
The garden is well-suited for relaxation; as the sign at the entrance indicates, it is a stress-free zone. It is equipped with music, water feature and covered areas where one can just marvel at the beauty of nature.
“I get my joy from taking care of the plants despite all the challenges from fungus, rainy season and having to ensure proper ventilation. Which means the use of extractors and fans to circulate the air. However, for me the Love Garden is a place where I feel sanctified; you look around and see blooms, different species of plants and you get to analyse them and appreciate the transitions,” Ward added further.
“I get great pleasure from the blooming orchids especially; at any given time, we’ll have up to 100 blooming orchids and for that I’m grateful. I will be in here for hours just enjoying nature and that just makes me happy!” Ward concluded.
