Spot Valley among daCosta teams aiming to keep unblemished records
Five schools are hoping to extend their unblemished records when the return-round matches in the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association/Wata daCosta Cup football competition gets underway on Friday.
Spot Valley High, Belair High and Ocho Rios High, who have all won their first five games, as well as Manning’s School, who have four wins, and Frome Technical with three wins, will all be on the hunt to repeat first-round triumphs.
While the return fixtures are set to start, there are a number of first-round games still to be played after they were postponed for a variety of reasons, including waterlogged fields due to rain.
Ocho Rios High could move a step closer to qualifying for the second round if they can beat Marcus Garvey Technical again after a 6-1 win in the first round.
Marcus Garvey Technical are in third place on six points, nine points behind the leaders. But they are still in contention for a place in the second round.
Spot Valley High, off to their best start to a season, are coming off a big morale-boosting win over William Knibb Memorial. However, they they are expected to be tested by Cedric Titus who are unbeaten at home and are yet to concede a goal.
Spot Valley High had won their first-round game 2-0 over Cedric Titus, who are in third place on nine points. A loss for Cedric Titus combined with a win for second-placed William Knibb over last-placed Holland High could put a dent in the former school’s plans to advance in the competition.
William Knibb must rebound with a comfortable win if they are to stay in contention after winning the first-round game 5-0.
Belair High are comfortably ahead in Zone F and are expected to get another three points after they had beaten Cross Keys High 9-0 in the first round.
Manning’s School had defeated Black River High 2-0 in the first round and will be expected to win again when they host the fixture in Savanna la Mar.
Frome Technical have not played in over a week and had two games postponed due to rain. They will be eager to return to action when they host Cambridge High who are coming off their first win in two seasons.
Meanwhile, ISSA’s Disciplinary Committee has banned Maalick Whyte and Shamair Hutchinson of Dinthill Technical from all ISSA run competitions for one year, effective September 26, 2024 and suspended Tyrese Gowe for three games, effective the same date for their part in an altercation on Saturday.
The players were involved in a confrontation with the match referee after their 1-1 draw with McGrath High. It is alleged that one of them physically assaulted the official.
Dinthill Technical were also placed on three years’ probation “and therefore may be suspended from participating in ISSA competitions if there are any further breaches of our disciplinary code of conduct within the period of probation”, a release from ISSA said.
