WATCH: Mitchell calls on NWA to address drainage issues amid Mandeville flooding
MANCHESTER, Jamaica — Several roads were flooded in Mandeville on Wednesday afternoon resulting in traffic congestion amid heavy and persistent rains.
Among the affected areas were Bonitto Crescent, Newleigh Road, deCarteret Road and Knowles Road.
Mandeville Mayor Donovan Mitchell reiterated his call for the National Works Agency (NWA) to address the reoccurring problem of flooding on some roads in Mandeville.
He said a private property owner had offered to facilitate drainage works on Newleigh Road.
“There is a pond there, but it is not soaking as fast as it should. I had met with the owners of Phil’s Hardware and members of NWA and Phil’s Hardware had decided to give the works agency some parts of their land that they could bring the water across their land through pipes. No [further] words have come from the NWA,” he claimed.
He added that the NWA should ensure that debris piled on the soft shoulder of the Winston Jones Highway be removed immediately.
“They should make sure that their officers go out and look at what is there before night to make sure that the debris is not near the roadway just in case anything can happen. We might have accidents,” he said.
