Dane Nelson reflects on successful season at Century Mile
Despite falling short of defending his championship title, four-time Jamaican champion jockey Dane Nelson deemed his season at Century Mile racetrack in Edmonton, Canada, a resounding success.
Nelson secured third place in the standings with 34 wins, trailing behind champion Jose Mariano Asencio (53 wins) and Rasheed Hughes (41 wins). The race meet started on May 5 and ended on September 14.
“I may not have defended my title, but I’m grateful for the progress I’ve made. Winning 34 races is an accomplishment, and I’ll continue to work tirelessly for more success,” Nelson shared with the Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide.
The accomplished jockey also celebrated his 400th career win on the international circuit, a testament to his dedication.
“Reaching 400 winners in Canada is a blessing. Hard work and faith have carried me from humble beginnings to greatness. I thank everyone involved in my journey: trainers, owners, grooms, fellow riders, my agent, fans, and family. Their support has been invaluable.”
Nelson has now shifted focus to Century Downs in Alberta, where he’s the defending champion rider. He kicked off his campaign with a bang, securing three wins over the weekend.
On Saturday, September 21, Nelson rode two winners — Squalotoro for trainer Carson Frey and Kauai Dan for trainer Craig Smith.
On Sunday, September 22, Nelson’ lone winner was Kiss Me Hello for trainer Robert Kingston.
