Remembering Dundee Hewitt
Dear Editor,
Our family recently lost a person of exemplary talent, Dundee Hewitt, a beacon of dedication and leadership in the education sector of Jamaica.
Hewitt’s legacy, particularly his tenure as president of the Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA) in 1977 and from 1987 to 1988 remains a testament to his unwavering commitment to championing the rights and welfare of educators across the island.
His journey with the JTA started at a time when the presidency was calculated on a calendar year, a period that required adaptability and strong leadership. Hewitt exemplified these qualities, guiding the association with a vision and purpose that inspired both his colleagues and future generations. Under his leadership the JTA thrived, becoming louder and stronger in its advocacy for teachers’ rights.
As the JTA transitioned through pivotal years, Hewitt’s influence extended beyond his presidency. From 1989 to 2000, he served as a regional officer for the JTA south/central office in Mandeville. His role in this capacity further cemented his reputation as a dedicated and principled educator, always focused on creating a better environment for those who teach. His efforts ensured that the voices of educators were heard, respected, and acted upon.
Bryon Farquharson, former secretary general of the JTA, rightly honours Hewitt for his remarkable contributions. Hewitt’s leadership style was both compassionate and firm, qualities that not only earned him respect but also led to significant advancements for the JTA. His tenure is remembered as a period of growth and empowerment for educators, a time when their rights were vigorously defended and their pressing issues brought to the forefront.
To colleagues, friends, and the countless educators who had the privilege of working with or learning from Hewitt, his legacy is indelible. He was not just an advocate but a mentor and a guiding light in the field of education. Hewitt’s passion for teaching and his commitment to the profession will continue to inspire long after his time.
As we reflect on the 60 years since the JTA was founded, we recognise the influence of leaders like Dundee Hewitt in shaping an organisation known for its vocal and courageous advocacy. His contributions remain a cornerstone of the association’s proud history.
Rest in peace, cousin Dundee. Your legacy of dedication, leadership, and unwavering advocacy for educators will forever be remembered and cherished.
My condolence to daughter Charlene and the rest of the family.
