Constable who lost leg on duty, discovers talent in Archery
KINGSTON, Jamaica — After a life-changing incident while on duty claimed his leg, a police constable decided to turn tragedy into triumph by rerouting his life.
Constable Antoine Francis faced an unimaginable challenge when he was injured while carrying out his duties as part of a Quick Response Team on July 7, 2023.
According to a release by the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), instead of cursing the cards he was dealt, the constable pivoted, discovering a hidden talent in archery months after his tragedy.
In March 2024, Constable Francis was introduced to archery by a co-worker, who is also a member of the Jamaica Rifle Association.
“This new sport not only provided him with a physical outlet but also reignited his competitive spirit. The precision and focus required in archery resonated with him deeply, allowing him to channel his determination into mastering this skill,” the JCF said. “With relentless dedication, Constable Francis committed himself to rigorous training sessions at the Jamaica Rifle Association. His hard work paid off as he quickly honed his skills in both singles and doubles competitions. By September 2024, he was ready to showcase his talent at the Caribbean Development Championship (CDC), held from September 19 to 22 at Plantation Cove in St Ann.”
The JCF shared that at the CDC, Constable Francis competed fiercely against some of the best archers in the region, earning two bronze medals: one for the doubles competition and another for singles compound.
“These accolades symbolise his success in archery and serve as a testament to his resilience and ability to overcome adversity. Constable Francis’ journey from tragedy to triumph is an inspiring story of determination and strength. His transition into archery has allowed him to reclaim a sense of purpose and also positioned him as a role model for others facing similar challenges,” the release read. “As he continues to compete and excel in this new arena, he embodies the spirit of perseverance that resonates far beyond the sport itself.”
