Crimes of passion Five times infidelity landed someone in court
IN the moments after infidelity is revealed, emotions can boil over, driving some to cross the line from heartbreak to homicide.
When heartbreak escalates to violence the consequences are dire, leading many to face justice for their actions and stand before the courts.
The Jamaica Observer, exploring the topic of infidelity, found five cases in which Jamaicans, blinded by the rage of their partner’s unfaithfulness, committed unlawful acts.
* In May 2023 Serita Housen Blair, a woman said to be in her 40s, was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of her common law husband, Kenton Brown.
The sentence was delivered in the Home Circuit Court in downtown Kingston by Justice Vaughn Smith who ordered that Blair serve 18 years before being eligible for parole.
It was reported that Blair suspected her common law husband was having an affair with his child’s caregiver. She allegedly confronted him about her suspicions the night of May 27, 2017, which he denied.
The court heard that Brown fell asleep shortly after their conversation and Blair doused him with gasoline and set him on fire. He died four days after being questioned by the police.
* In May this year, 30-year-old Shaneika Malcolm was arrested and charged with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm.
It is alleged that on April 25, 2024, Malcolm went to her boyfriend’s residence in Christian Pen, Portmore, and accused him of being unfaithful.
An argument reportedly erupted between the two. It is said that Malcolm doused her partner with a bottle of white rum and allegedly used a lighter to set him ablaze.
He was rescued by a neighbour who poured water on him. The victim was taken to Spanish Town Hospital for treatment for extensive burns to the back and lower body.
Malcom was remanded when she appeared before the St Catherine Parish Court.
* A man from St Thomas, Mario Lewis, otherwise called Gizmo, was arrested and charged with wounding with intent following an incident linked to infidelity.
It is said that on July 18, 2023 Lewis, a resident of Winchester District, Golden Grove, and his girlfriend were at his house when an argument developed about infidelity.
The Golden Grove police reported that about 2:00 pm a struggle ensued between the couple and Lewis used a knife to stab the woman in her neck. She was taken to hospital. Her condition at the time was stable.
* In May 2021 the Trelawny police arrested and charged 62-year-old Stenneth Wilson with the murder of his common law wife, 29-year-old Nickeisha Keeling.
The Clark’s Town police reported that the couple argued at their home on May 8, 2021, at about 11:00 pm. The argument escalated into a fight and Wilson allegedly used a knife and a machete to chop her to death.
He then travelled to the Clark’s Town Police Station where he reportedly told cops that he killed his partner out of jealousy because she was cheating on him.
* In October last year a man was charged with possession of a prohibited weapon and assault occasioning bodily harm when he allegedly hit his girlfriend in the face with a firearm.
He is Damion Kelly, a resident of Old Harbour, St Catherine.
It is reported that Kelly and his girlfriend were arguing over claims of infidelity when he hit her in the face with the weapon.
He was arrested and taken before the St Catherine Parish Court to answer the charges.
