Muschett High awarded Jill Stewart Sports Scholarship
MONTEGO BAY, St James — The recent success of Muschett High School’s track team was recognised on Wednesday when it was awarded the $300,000 Jill Stewart Sports Scholarship.
PJ Stewart, mother of Jamaica Observer and Sandals Resorts Executive Chairman Adam Stewart and mother-in-law to the late Jill Stewart, made the announcement during an event to mark the disbursement of scholarships raised through the Jill Stewart MoBay City Run.
“We are thrilled to congratulate the 2024 awardee, the Muschett High School track team. We are unbelievably proud of your incredible success recently, especially in Champs 2024,” said PJ Stewart.
There were outstanding performances from at least two students from the Trelawny-based institution at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Championships earlier this year. Standouts Shanoya Douglas and Yohan Romaldo Smythe lit up the track at the event, making a name for themselves and their institution at the iconic event.
Douglas took double gold in the girls’ class two 200m and 400m, while Smythe took home the boys’ 200m. Osmand Holt took bronze in the decathlon.
“We’re celebrating your achievements, acknowledging your bright future and journey onto the world stage. You brought home the first-ever gold medal for Muschett, in fact, you made three gold medals and one bronze, which is exceptional,” PJ Stewart said during Wednesday’s ceremony.
“We believe in you and we are committed to helping you pursue your dreams because excellence has no boundaries,” she added.
The school’s track coach Garth Smythe welcomed the support. He already knows exactly how it will help enhance their operations.
“With the sport your recovery programme has to be on point, so I made a request for a refrigerator so we could have ice adequately at all times,” he explained.
“It’s going to be a boost because we have faced challenges with getting ice to help with recovery on a daily and weekly basis,” Smythe added.
He thanked event organisers for their support and indicated that the school family was grateful for what they received.
“It will be a boost moving forward and I hope other persons will come on board,” said Smythe.
