WATCH: Lawrence Tavern taxi fleet protest poor road conditions
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Scores of taxi operators for the Lawrence Tavern route withdrew their services on Tuesday in protest over the deplorable road conditions.
The taxi operators blocked sections of the Cassava River main road leading into GlenGoffe, Lawrence Tavern in St Andrew.
Speaking with Observer Online, the operators made claims of increased expenses due to weekly purchasing of vehicle parts as a result of the poor state of the roads.
“We desperately need the road. The road nuh good fi di car dem to drive pon…It nuh look good at all. Is not a good look,” one taxi operator shared.
“Every two to three weeks mi a change parts, come in like it nuh make sense mi have a car…We desperately need the help,” he continued.
Councillor for the Lawrence Tavern Division, John Myers joined the group in pleading for assistance from the National Works Agency (NWA) and the relevant authorities.
“It is bad and I am here today to support the residents and the people who traverse this area because it’s a National Works Agency road and it’s really in a bad, bad condition. From the border of me (Lawrence Tavern) to Temple Hall, it’s in a terrible condition and I would like something to be done urgently,” Myers said.
“Dem have to do something because you see cars ah drop in the holes, you see people foot break, dem ah hold up people in the vicinity of the area because the car dem can’t drive fast,” Myers added.
He is calling on the NWA to do a tour of the main road in the area including the bus route.
