Former daCosta Cup winners Glenmuir target fourth-straight win
Former champions Glenmuir High will seek to match last season’s four-game winning start when they take on winless Winston Jones High in the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) daCosta Cup Zone I game at Winston Jones High in Pratville, Manchester.
Glenmuir, last season’s beaten finalists, are one of four schools — the others are Holmwood Technical, Happy Grove High and Port Antonio High — that have won their first three daCosta Cup games.
Winston Jones have lost their first three games by a 0-15 margin. They lost all their games in 2022, the last time they contested the competition.
The Andrew Peart-coached Glenmuir have run roughshod over the zone so far, scoring 20 goals in three games, including Saturday’s 2-0 win over Garvey Maceo High, the team expected to be their toughest opponent in the first round.
Six other schools, will be going after win number three today, including surprise packages Anchovy High and Spot Valley High. A total of 22 games are down to be played, including a rescheduled fixture between Foga Road High and Kemps Hill High.
Anchovy High, who are to host Cambridge High, should be flying high on confidence after outplaying Rusea’s High in a 1-0 win on Saturday.
Cambridge High are still searching for their first point since returning to the competition last year. They have managed one goal in their two losses.
Frome Technical will seek to keep pace with Anchovy High in Zone B when they host winless Knockalva Technical at the Frome Sports Complex.
Mannings School, coming off a massive 9-0 whipping of Godfrey Stewart in the Sav-la-Mar derby on Saturday, are away to Little London, who won their first game since returning to the competition after missing the last five seasons.
Little London beat Godfrey Stewart 2-0 in their opening game but face a much better team in Manning’s School, who are yet to concede a goal after two wins.
Spot Valley High have already surpassed their number of wins from last season when they managed one victory, while playing in Zone A. They will start favourites to make it three in a row for the first time since 2017 when they won their first four games on their way to topping the Zone.
Their opponents Holland High have conceded 11 goals in two games so far and must turn around their form if they are to get anything out of the contest.
Zone E leaders Munro College are also fancied to extend their good start when they take on last-placed Newell High, who have lost both games played so far.
Belair High beat Mount St Joseph Catholic in both games between the teams last season.
Belair have been on a good run the last two years, advancing past the first round on both occasions and have scored 13 goals in their first two games.
Cornwall College will hope to exorcise some demons when they welcome Irwin High in a fixture that attracted a lot of attention over the last two seasons.
Cornwall College’s most recent win against upstarts Irwin High came in the 2021 season and to add intrigue, Dr Dean Weatherly, who guided Cornwall College to many titles, is now on the Irwin High bench.
Irwin High are off to a slow start, relative to the last two years, drawing back-to-back games, while Cornwall College beat Herbert Morrison 4-1 and were leading 1-0 late against Maldon High when that game was blown off prematurely.
Former champions Rusea’s High will seek to bounce back after Saturday’s toothless display against Anchovy High when they host Green Island High.
St Elizabeth Technical, who have scored just two goals in their two games, are to host BB Coke High.
