Truly a Legend
One of the best-selling albums in music history, Legend, by Bob Marley and The Wailers, has become only the second album to spend 850 weeks on the Billboard 200 chart.
Released in 1984 by Island Records, Legend achieved the milestone last week, according to Forbes magazine.
Only The Dark Side of The Moon by British rock band Pink Floyd has reached that figure. That set, released in 1973, is nine weeks from becoming the first album to spend 1,000 weeks on the Billboard 200.
“There aren’t many artistes who claim enough huge hits that have stood the test of time that they never fall from the ranking of the most-consumed albums in the US. The reggae superstar can always be found on the competitive tally, and as Americans continue to listen and buy, his biggest release reaches a historic milestone,” read a paragraph from the Forbes article.
The Marley brand enjoyed a significant boost in 2024 with the release of the Bob Marley: One Love biopic, starring British actor Kingsley Ben-Adir as Marley, grossing over US$180 million. Its soundtrack contains a number of songs from Legend, including Get Up, Stand Up; Roots, Rock, Reggae; I Shot The Sheriff; Turn Your Lights Down Low; and Jamming.
Last week, according to Forbes, Legend was #63 on the Billboard 200. It had peaked at #5.
Legend came out three years after Marley’s death at age 36 from cancer. The initial vinyl compilation had 14 songs, 10 of which made the Top 10 chart in the United Kingdom.
Billboard magazine estimates Legend has sold over 25 million copies globally, making it one of the top-selling catalogue albums in music history. It has been repackaged and reissued several times by Island and Universal Music, owners of the Island Records catalogue.
